Compass players at ITTF development camp
From the 29th of May to the 4th of June, the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) held a High Performance camp in Halmstad, Sweden. Four compass-supported players and their coaches took part.
The camp was held in the same arena building that hosted the 2018 World Team Championships. It focused on the U15 age category and was held in conjunction with the WTT Youth Contenders in Helsingborg, Sweden (05-08.06.) and Sandefjord, Norway (10.-13.06.).
“A great camp,” said Camilo Giraldo, a coach based in Portugal, where he has been coaching Compass supported Colombian Emanuel Otalvaro (born 2010) since Otalvaro was nine years old. “It is good for Emanuel to meet strong players of his age from different countries. And for me as a coach, exchanging ideas with colleagues and seeing how head coach Eva Jeler works gives me new ideas on how to continue training with Emanuel”.
Camillo also praised the surroundings: “The venue, the hotel and the food are all fantastic.”
14 players from 11 countries
A total of 14 players from 11 countries attended the camp and four of them are or were supported by compass – besides Otalvaro, Görkem Öcal from Turkey, who recently won the singles and mixed doubles titles at the U13 European Championships, Danilo Faso, last year’s U13 European Singles Champion – and Kacper Piwowar from England.
Compass Managing Director Daniel Zwickl also visited the camp and commented:
“It is exciting to see four of the players supported by compass at the ITTF High Performance Training Camp. This is an opportunity for players and coaches to interact and benefit from each other. It is great to see the diversity of the participants and we are happy to continue our discussions with the ITTF with the aim of supporting and developing talents worldwide.”
One very talented player was certainly nine-year-old Joseph Sebatindra from Uganda, who impressed compass-tt.com during the match session with good footwork, game plan and a hard forehand.
“The main focus of this camp was to evaluate the technical development of the players who have already been part of the ITTF programmes”, said Eva Jeler, ITTF Head Coach.
After the camp Eva Jeler and all the players and coaches went to Helsingborg to participate in the WTT Youth Contender, which was held there from 05.-08.06.
