“In my first match (3:0 against Mihai Nagy) I felt confident but I still did not play very well,” said Danilo after the final. “In the doubles it was tougher, but Francesco and I managed to win some crucial hard rallies and finally won 3:1″.

Went on to win

Victory in the doubles made it 2:1 to Italy when Danilo met Romania’s number one Robert Alexandru Istrate, who had defeated Francesco Trevisan in four games earlier in the final.

Danilo Faso came out on top in the first game, winning 11:5. The second might have been the deciding game as the match went to 16:16 before Danilo closed it out to win 18:16.

Focused

“I knew I was playing against a strong opponent and I was very focused and concentrated in my actions at the table,” Danilo continued. “I played at my highest level and I am really happy that I could do that in such an important event.”

This seemed to break Istrate, who could not recover from the long second set. He only managed to win three points in the fourth game.
