Last weekend, Frenchman Flavien Coton from compass won his first U19 singles title at a WTT Youth Contender event. Coton, who was born in 2008 and is up to three years younger than many of his opponents, defeated India’s Divyansh Srivastava in the final in Panagyurishte, Bulgaria.

Flavien was seeded fifth to eighth in the knockout phase. After defeating Sharpel Elia from Cyprus and Luca Oprea from Romania, Flavien faced top seed Kim Gaon from the Republic of Korea in the quarter-finals. And won quite confidently in clear games. Mykyta Zavada from Ukraine awaited in the semi-finals, and it was a close and exciting match that ended in a 3:2 victory for Flavien. After losing the third game 11:13, Coton came back, pulled his strings and eventually won 11:9 in the deciding set.

The final was no less evenly matched. Here Flavien faced the 19-year-old Indian Divyansh Srivastava. After winning the first two games, Coton was on the verge of a 3:0 victory, but the 19-year-old Indian fought back, winning 12:10 and the fourth game 11:6. In the deciding set, Flavien showed the best nerves and finally won 11:8.

“It was nice for Flavien to return to the WTT Youth Contender scene and win this tournament,” said compass expert coach Bogdan Pugna, who works a lot with Coton in Ochsenhausen. “Playing it was a bit strategic as he has lost a few places in the youth world rankings recently.”

However, Flavien was not as successful in the U17 competition as he was in the U19 competition. He reached the quarter-finals in the U17s, where he lost 3:2 to Tiago Abiodun from Portugal, who, like Flavien, was born in 2008.

“The two met in the final of Euro Minichamps 2019 and that shows that the competition behind Flavien is strong, which is very good,” Bogdan Pugna continued. “There is a hope for Europe for the future, several players are working well and committed to challenge at senior level in the future.”

Another compass player, Görkem Öcal from Turkey, won one game in the knockout phase of the U17 tournament before losing to Lee Seungsoo from the Republic of Korea. Görkem progressed in the U15 event: He defeated England’s Kacper Piwowar without losing a set in the last eight and then lost 2:3 to Rija Warin after leading 2:1. Görkem lost the last two games 9:11 and 8:11, but it was still a good result for Görkem, who is only 12 years old.

Görkem was also successful in the U15 mixed doubles competition. Alongside his compatriot Elif Akyurek, the Turkish team made it through to the final. There, Istrate/Baias from Romania were a little too strong in the end. Öcal/Akyurek led 2:1, but lost the last two games 2:11 and 9:11.

Ivo third at the Top 12 in Germany

It was an intense weekend of competition for several members of team compass. In Germany, the prestigious Top 12 tournament was held in Arnstorf, Bavaria. The twelve best players in the country in the U19 and U15 age groups met there in a round-robin tournament, i.e. everyone played one match against everyone else.

In the boys’ U15 category, one player had to retire, meaning that a total of ten matches had to be played. compass player Ivo Quett won seven and lost three, placing him third behind the winner Jonas Rinderer (8 wins, 2 losses) and Alexander Uhing, who, like Ivo, had seven wins.

compass player Luke Jalass finished in 10th place with two wins and eight defeats.

“Ivo has developed well as a player, but still needs to become more stable at a higher level,” commented Oliver Alke, compass expert coach.
