Mayorov, Malov, Faso and Moreno medallists at WTT Youth Contenders

A title to Ladimir Mayorov and a bronze to Alexander Malov in Girona, Spain. An exceptional bronze to Danilo Faso in Wladyslawowo, Poland. And a bronze to Steven Moreno in Berlin, Germany.

It has been an intense period of competition with several top class WTT Youth Contenders – and the compass-supported players are also in the medal hunt when the best players from Asia arrive.

The two Spanish Compass supported players Ladimir Mayorov and Alexander Malov were the best performers among the Foundation’s participants at the WTT Youth Contender Platja D’Aro, Girona, Spain, which took place from 13-19 May.

On his way to the title, Ladimir, who is two years younger than many of his competitors, defeated three French players: Roger Quesada 3:1 in the quarter-finals, Tim Escudier 3:0 in the semi-finals and Sasha Campagne 3:1 in the final – 11:6, 11:8, 7:11, 11:4. Alexander Malov, on the other hand, defeated Portugal’s Rodrigo Andrade 3:2 in the quarter-finals before losing to Sasha Campagne 3:1 in the semi-finals.

Mayorov also reached the last eight in the U15 singles. In the U15 mixed doubles, both youngsters reached the last eight – Ladimir with compatriot Eloisa Barreda and Alexander with Esther Hasek, also from Spain.

Wladyslawowo, Poland

At the WTT Youth Contender in Wladyslawowo, Poland 22.-25.05. compass supported Italian Danilo Faso made a big splash when he managed to win the bronze medal. Faso was born in 2010 and is 13 years old. He was seeded 23rd in the U19 event, which features players up to five years older than him. Nevertheless, he reached the semis and the last 4!

Danilo beat Sweden’s Elias Sjögren (3:1), Romania’s Robert Podar (3:2, 11:9 in the decider) and Poland’s Alan Kulczycki, seeded 5th in the competition, 3:1.

In the semi-final, Danilo was beaten in straight games by Nathan Lam of France 7:11, 11:13, 2:11.

“I played my best table tennis ever”, Danilo Faso commented afterwards. “I am proud to have beaten Podar and Kulczycki. My backhand was working really well throughout the tournament, which improved my performance.”

Compass-supported German Josephina Neumann had a tough draw. In both the U19 and U17 categories she was paired with the strong Yeh Yi-Tian from Chinese Taipei. At U19 they met in the second round of the knockout stage and at U17 in the quarter finals. Josi” defeated Chiang Javelle from Singapore 3:1, but was unable to win any games against Yeh.
Josi also played mixed doubles with Patryk Zyworunek from Poland. The team lost 3:1 to Su and Liu of Chinese Taipei in the round of the last 16.

Danilo Faso also played in the U17 where he lost 2:3 to Hung Che-Yen from Chinese Taipei in the second knockout round.

Berlin, Germany

At the WTT Youth Contender Berlin (27.5 to 02.06.), compass supported Steven Moreno from Puerto Rico reached the semi-finals in the U15 category. In the knockout stage, Steven started with a 3-1 win over Axel Bossis from France. He then defeated Hong Che-Yen, Chinese Taipei in a thrilling match in which Hong was leading 2:1, but Steven Moreno managed to turn the match around by winning the fourth game 14:12 (!) and the decider 11:7.

In the quarter-finals, China’s Yu Haiyang had no chance, losing 3-1 to Moreno. In the semi-finals, Moreno had a 2-2 lead against another Chinese player, Wang Zining, but lost the decider at 5-6.

“It was a tough tournament for me. I had several even matches with Chinese players and from Chinese Taipei,” said Steven Moreno afterwards. “It was a great experience and it was a boost to my self-confidence to have a couple of wins.”

Josi Neumann reached the round of last 16 in both the U15 and U17 categories. In U17 Josi defeated Hardee Patel from India before losing to Yao Ruixuan from China in straight games. In U15 Josi beat Angeline Li from Singapore before losing to Nina Skerbinz from Austria in straight games.

Havirov, Czech Republic

At the WTT Youth Contender Havirov, Czech Republic (27.05.-02.06.), Steven Moreno defeated his fellow countryman Enrique Rios in the U17 knockout stage 3:0 and then Shi Junbo from China 3:2 after being down 1:2 and winning the last games 11:7, 11:6. In the round of the last 16 Steven was defeated by Li Hechen from China in a very even four game match 8:11, 11:13, 13:11, 12:14.

In the U15 age group Steven managed to reach the quarter finals. After beating two Polish players, Steven finally lost 1:3 to Yu Haiyang from China.
