Siri’s first WTT win in the U13 category
A win in the U13 singles for Siri Benjegård. A semi-final in the U15 competition for Emanuel Otalvaro. These were the most important results of the compass players at the WTT Youth Contender Luxembourg, which took place from 17-20.04.
Siri Benjegård won her first U13 title at the WTT Youth Contender in Luxembourg. Siri won her qualification group. In the knockout stage she defeated Karyaa Madaan from Australia 3:1 in the quarter finals. After that she won 3:1 against Lisa Zhao from France in the semi-finals and finally beat Li Jen-Yueh from Chinese Taipei 3:1 in the final.
“Siri once again showed great competitive spirit and dominated with her backhand side,” said compass expert coach Oliver Alke, who was present in the hall.
“She was also safe, putting the ball back on the table almost all the time. She has improved and I was quite impressed how she overcame some difficulties in the matches.”
Siri also reached the knockout stage in the U15 competition, where she lost in the round of 16.
Otalvaro in the top four
compass player Emanuel Otalvaro from Colombia impressed by winning two matches in the knockout stage and defeating a Chinese player – Zhou Guanhong – in the third round 11:9 in the fifth and deciding game. This was in the round of the last 16. In the quarter-finals, Emanuel lost to another Chinese player – Wang Zining – in straight games.
“Emanuel played quite well, especially considering that he still has a year left in the category. He was also in the last 16 of the U17 event where he won one game and lost one 10:12 to the eventual winner, chopper Sun Yang,” said Oliver Alke.
First international competition
Joel Isaksson reached the last 16 of the U13 event and also qualified for the knockout stage of the U15 event, where he won one match before losing in straight games to Samuel Michna of Poland. Jeffrey Wei also made it to the last 16 in the U-13 category, losing to Frenchman Muller.
“A pretty okay tournament for Jeffrey, especially considering that it was his first appearance in a WTT Youth Contender. Joel did well to get through the group qualifying rounds in both the U13 and U15 categories at the age of 11.
All in all it was a great organised tournament. Now the tour continues to Spa in Belgium and Metz in France.”
