Welcome to compass Arthur Stribeck!
Arthur Stribeck is a new, very young player in the compass team. The eight-year-old Swede has Truls Möregårdh as his role model. His goal is to qualify for the Euro Minichamps and do well there.
Arthur Stribeck started playing table tennis because his older brother went to IFK Täby TTC, about 12 kilometres north of the Swedish capital, Stockholm. Arthur was five years old at the time.
“I liked playing straight away,” Arthur remembers. “It was nice because it was fast, the balls came all over the table, I had to react quickly. And I liked that I could put a lot of spin on the ball.”
His parents, Peter and Manda, took him to a club camp during a school holiday and he got hooked. So Arthur started playing twice a week and suddenly he was competing.
“It was a team club competition in Stochholm called S:t Eric’s Cup. Someone was missing from my team and they wanted me to come in. I liked it a lot. It was fun and cool to play in a real tournament.”
Nowadays Arthur plays about four times a week in training and then most weekends in tournaments. He is improving fast and last summer he was selected to go to the compass summer camp in Saarbrücken, Germany. He went with his dad.
“It was fun. I was the youngest, but there was another Swede there, Joel Isaksson, which made it easier for me.”
Back in Sweden this season, among other good national results, Arthur won a tournament organised by Stratos club and another in Eskilstuna, despite being a year younger than most of his opponents.
“It feels good to win.”
And how does it feel to lose? “Terrible. I get so angry.”
Why is that? “I want to win so badly.”
Arthur also plays football. He used to do more, but when he started playing table tennis, football had to take a back seat. Arthur’s experience is that table tennis is nicer:
“Yes, there is more spin in table tennis and I like to spin the ball, especially when I serve.”
He also plays for his club in the seventh division.
“It is good to meet all kinds of styles, but most of the players I meet are very old and slow. I prefer to play with kids.”
What are your strengths as a table tennis player? “I don’t hesitate when the score is equal. I go for it regardless of the score”.
What are your goals at the moment? “To qualify for the Euro Minichamps in a year or two, to represent Sweden and to perform well there.”
Thanks for the answers Arthur! Good luck for the future!
