Winners in Ecuador: Emanuel and Alexander
Compass supported Colombian Emanuel Otalvaro won the U19 singles event at the WTT Youth Contender Cuenca, Ecuador. And Alexander Malov of Spain won the U15 singles and U15 mixed titles with Mariana Rodriquez of Colombia.
Emanuel Otalvaro is 14 years old, yet he managed to win the competition against opponents up to five years older. Emanuel defeated Remi Chambet-Weil of the Netherlands 3:1 in the knockout stage and Diego Piguave 3:1 in the semi-final. His final opponent was Joshua Robayo from the host country Ecuador. Emanuel won 11:5, 10:12, 11:5 and 11:6.
Despite winning the U19 title, Emanuel “only” reached the semi-finals of the U17 event, where he beat Rivardo Bernal from Ecuador in the quarter-finals, but lost to the same Joshua he had beaten in the U19 final.
Two victories for Alexander
Alexander Malov flew all the way from Spain to take part and got a good reward. “Sasha” won the U15 after beating Ecuadorian Juan Montalvo and Boris Villavicencio, also from Ecuador, in straight games in the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively.
In the final, Alexander lost one game – but eventually won 3:1 against Ricardo Bernal 11:8, 11:6, 7:11 and 11:4.
In the U15 mixed doubles Sasha won his second gold medal, this time together with Mariana Rodriquez from Colombia. The team had a tough semi-final against the host nation’s Karolayn Moldonado/Cesar Revelo, which they won 3:2 (11:3 in the decider). The final was a straight-sets affair against Emily Macay/Matias Baldeon, also from Ecuador, who were unable to play, thus it was a walk over.
